Whittens acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land and community. We pay our respect to them and their cultures, and to the Elders both past and present.

As a company and a group of individuals, Whittens actively supports and promotes the development of strong, healthy and vibrant communities in which it operates. As part of this approach, Whittens is actively committed to creating culturally respectful business practices, and partnering with Traditional Owner Groups and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to increase their workforce participation and partnership opportunities.

We are engaged on projects based in remote locations that affect local Aboriginal communities. Therefore, we have resolved to focus on employment and career development for these communities and on being involved in local programmes, throughout Australia. Whittens aims to maintain an understanding of Traditional Owner Groups’ cultural heritage in the areas in which we operate; and to engage with the local Traditional Owners to achieve commercial and educational benefits through projects delivered together, wherever appropriate.

Our strategies to support this commitment include:

  • Bidding on tenders with an Aboriginal engagement focus;
  • Engaging the services of Aboriginal employment agencies;
  • Delivering cultural awareness and competency training with local Aboriginal leaders;
  • Promoting apprenticeships and traineeships to Aboriginal employees; and
  • Establishing products and services to support the growth of Aboriginal business and community sustainability.

Through these strategies, Whittens aims to provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain skills within the civil concrete construction industry through training and sustainable employment. We are committed to engaging in long-term joint ventures with Aboriginal owned and operated businesses to add real and meaningful value to each other’s growth and development. Whittens also undertakes to ensure we maintain the cultural integrity of all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement initiatives.
